United States: According to the state’s Health Department of New York, a person has been hospitalized with Eastern equine encephalitis, which is deemed to be a rare but serious mosquito-borne disease.

More about the news

The latest infection case was reported in Ulster County, lying hundred miles north of New York City.

The first confirmed case of the disease in a human in New York since 2015, the New York Times reported.

As per the official report, there is no vaccine for the disease yet, and the disease is called E.E.E., and there is no cure in place.

The state officials have also notified the urgency of the residents taking precautionary steps to avoid mosquito bites.

Human cases of the disease

So far, human cases of the virus have been reported from at least six states this summer, most of which are from the Northeast, as per the CDC.

The health agency has recorded at least ten cases of EEE infection in humans country-wide as of September 17.

Those who get bitten by the infected mosquito do not develop symptoms. However, some might feel headaches, fevers, or chills.

In severe situations, the disease could lead to seizures, comas, and even encephalitis. As per the expert reports, almost one-third of the cases are fatal, and more than half result in long-term neurological complications.

What more are the experts stating?

According to an expert, Dr. James McDonald, who is working as a New York’s health commissioner mentioned several vital points, and raised concern that, “Even though temperatures are getting cooler, mosquito-borne illnesses are still a risk, and New Yorkers must be cautious.”

The reports state that the mosquitoes would continue to flourish until the weather gets cold enough for stagnant waters, which are the breeding grounds of the insect, as reported by the New York Times.

As per the report published by the CDC, Massachusetts, particularly, has been a hot spot for the virus, with four cases reported.
