What is C15:0?

I love a good TED Talk, you? This one is about how a small change in the diet of dolphins can extend their lifespan by up to 30 years…which can potentially be applied to humans too (!!) presented by Veterinary Epidemiologist, Dr. Stephanie Venn-Watson.

It all started when Stephanie began working with the US Navy back in 2001 to help improve the health and welfare of their dolphins (yes, the navy has its own dolphins!). Through her work she came to understand that dolphins age very similarly to humans (showing signs of high cholesterol, arthritis, chronic inflammation, etc.) and those under her care were living 20 years longer than those in the wild!

So why were some dolphins living longer than others? Through this research, Dr. Stephanie Venn-Watson was able to identify a key marker of health—higher C15:0 levels. C15:0 is the first essential fatty acid discovered in 90 years. “We found that some dolphins were aging at a faster rate than others. Excitingly, when dolphins were provided a diet higher in C15:0, they not only had improved metabolic and liver health, they also had evidence of slower aging,” says Dr. Venn-Watson. These two studies were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and PLOS ONE

Ready to go back to high school health class? Me neither but hang with me for a sec. If you don’t remember, “essential fatty acids” are things that we need certain levels of in our bodies to remain healthy BUT our bodies don’t make them—so WE HAVE TO ingest these to get their benefits.

For the past 90 years, it’s been universally accepted that there are two categories of fatty acids,  omega 3 and omega 6.

But now? You can add C15:0 to that list. (Backed by papers written by John Hopkins University, Harvard University, University of Cambridge and more.)

Now, while dolphins get their C15:0 from specific types of fish, humans’ primary source of C15:0 was whole milk and butter. Which is great, except dairy products like this come with a host of other issues, including inflammation.

So fatty15 created a pure, stable, sustainable, vegan-friendly, plant-based C15:0 ingredient that can be used to fortify foods throughout the world to help fix this nutritional deficiency.

What does fatty15 do for your body?

Fatty15 is a supplement that’s composed of a single ingredient: C15:0. C15:0 (pentadecanoic acid) is an essential nutrient and healthy saturated fat that protects cells from the damage that comes with age. Specifically, fatty15 is good for:

  • Making cells stronger and more resilient.
  • Improving mitochondrial function, which supports cellular energy.
  • Activating receptors throughout the brain and body that regulate immunity, metabolism, mood, sleep and appetite.

In addition, Dr. Venn-Watson explains that when researchers look at C15:0 in relation to Type 2 Diabetes and Fatty Liver Disease, it has shown to successfully reduce glucose, cholesterol, inflammation; it’s also treated anemia and it decreased the severity of liver disease.

But it’s not just fatty15 and Dr. Venn-Watson saying so. Over 70 peer-reviewed studies have demonstrated C15:0’s role in supporting long-term metabolic, heart, liver and immune human health. And some studies have also linked higher C15:0 to longer life.

How long does it take fatty15 to work?

Fatty15 says within the first few weeks you may see benefits like, “less snacking and hunger between meals; deeper, better quality sleep and waking up feeling more refreshed; a calmer mood, less anxiety and better ability to cope with stress; and more energy that is better sustained throughout the day.” They also add, “For longer-term benefits, our studies support that fatty15 starts working between 1 to 3 months.”

I tried fatty15

The kids and I watched the Matrix this past weekend which, if you remember, is all about AI taking over and ruling the world (using human bodies as batteries to run the AI). And, with the current explosion of AI, I was watching this movie giving side-eye and 😬-face like, OMG this is not so sci-fi anymore.

And that’s kind of how I feel about health technology too. Like, we really have the ability to seek and find longevity…and it’s happening RIGHT NOW.

Nicolle has also been taking fatty15 for about 6 weeks and she can report (with some evidence-based data!) that she’s seen a regulation in her sleep and appetite. [*Nicolle has a collection of chronic illnesses, and she tracks her symptoms daily through an app, so she can demonstrate to her doctors how things have ebbed and flowed during her treatments/testing, etc.] Here’s what her sleep and her appetite looked like over the last month while she was taking fatty15:

Nicolle’s appetite graph on the left, showing a leveling out of her appetite over time—before fatty15, her appetite was inconsistent and after a month of fatty15, her appetite is more stable; Nicolle’s sleep graph on the right, showing how her self-reported sleep has improved over the last month, going from consistently “awful” to more consistently “good.”

Do you see how her appetite leveled off and her sleep has been improving?! Now, all of that is self-reported, and both she and I have been living a more conscious lifestyle for years, so it’s hard to parse out exactly what could have been the difference maker here. BUT, she tracked all this without the intention of showcasing fatty15’s benefits, so it wasn’t just a placebo effect. And, since fatty15 says it can take 1-3 months to experience noticeable changes, we feel like we’re well on our way to a more noticeable impact.

Fatty15 FAQs

Because this is such NEW science and because we as a team had a lot of questions about the supplement, we worked with the fatty15 team to answer as many as possible (aka, we stood in for you as a reader to help us all understand what this even is).

Much of the research on C15:0 is by fatty15’s founders. Is there any unbiased research supporting C15:0’s benefits?

Yes, lots! While fatty15’s founders were the first to discover that C15:0 is an active and beneficial nutrient to support our long-term health, numerous peer-reviewed studies have since demonstrated the many health benefits of C15:0. A complete list of these studies can be found here.

Is C15:0 really different from other odd-chain saturated fatty acids (OCFAs)?

Yes, it is! The two most common OCFAs are C15:0 and C17:0. While higher levels of both C15:0 and C17:0 are associated with lower risks of having type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, numerous studies have shown that C15:0 has the greatest direct activities that cause these benefits.

Is there truly a difference between even- and odd-chain saturated fatty acids (aka, does one carbon really make a difference)?

Yes, there is! Nature is incredibly good at tailoring molecules to meet specific needs. Numerous studies have consistently shown that odd-chain saturated fatty acids, especially C15:0, are associated with better cardiometabolic, immune and liver health. In contrast, these same studies have shown that even-chain saturated fatty acids (especially C16:0), are proinflammatory fatty acids associated with poorer health.

Is this really new science, or just a spin for marketing purposes?

This is really new science. Fatty15 founders’ discovery of C15:0 as the first essential fatty acid to be discovered since omega-3, which was over 90 years ago, has been recognized as a Fast Company World Changing Idea in Wellness, Nutritional Outlook Magazine’s Best of the Industry Award, and as a TEDx talk.

How is fatty15 any different than just eating an extra serving of salmon?

While it is typically better to get our nutrients from food, food-based C15:0 has several big limitations. First, some studies have shown that eating fish and other high-fat foods can actually decrease our circulating C15:0 levels.

Second, foods that contain the good, odd-chain C15:0 saturated fatty acid also contain much higher levels of proinflammatory, even-chain C16:0 saturated fats.

Third, C15:0 in foods are bound to complex lipids called triacylglycerides, which are not absorbable (our bodies have to use digestive enzymes to break C15:0 down into bioavailable free fatty acids).

For these reasons, fatty15’s founders of doctors and scientists spent years developing a pure, vegan-friendly C15:0 ingredient that successfully raises our C15:0 levels by providing just the good C15:0 fat in a highly bioavailable free fatty acid form. This is the only ingredient in fatty15.
